Coaching
The distinction between Coaching and Psychological Counselling is not clearly defined. Both processes are aimed at healthy people and their general objective is solving problems or overcoming challenges, helping the client to develop his/her own strengths and learn new skills. In my understanding, Coaching is even more solution focused and goal oriented than Counselling. Main goals of Counselling are often overcoming a defined problem or coming to an important decision. Coaching is often more about optimisation and development. Originally, the term coaching comes from sports, where a coach assists athletes in achieving top performances. In the professional context the term coaching is used more often, presumably because in the workplace achieving top performances is often a major concern as well. In recent years, however, a trend towards "Life Coaching" has developed, where a coach supports his/her clients (outside the career context) in defining, pursuing and achieving their own goals and at the same time also learning techniques for overcoming challenges and achieving goals on their own in the future, thus improving their long term life satisfaction and quality of life.
